Railways

In my childhood, and since, we always lived within sound of Railway lines. Steam railways, their history, and engineering have always fascinated me.
I cannot think of any other man made machine which so looks, sounds, moves, and smells, to be so in tune with its function.
Many steam and other locomotives are very architectural in their design, which in my opinion, has always (with some famous exceptions) gone beyond the purely functional.
They are complicated, but I do enjoy the challenge of trying to represent them in watercolour painting... some of the illustrated pictures have been commissioned, others are simply memories of happy days !!
